Museums that may have invested in high-resolution medium format equipment for archival work in the past might find the 240MP output offered by the a7R IV to be adequate. What’s more, the A7R IV delivers a claimed 15 stops of dynamic range for “breathtaking realism,” according to Sony, which puts it well within — and potentially even above — medium format territory. The A7R4 can accomplish a foggy, sun-poking-through dynamic scene such as this, even with out-of-camera JPGs. And it can do a lot more than just take high-resolution photos. It's nothing new—Sony has included it since the second generation of a7 cameras—and it's one of those features that works in the background, improving the images you get out of the camera without your having to think about it. It's a welcome addition, and it's the style of lock I prefer. It's a BSI CMOS design, with the same pixel pitch as 26MP APS-C sensors, like you find in the Fujifilm X-T30. We’ve seen this viewfinder previously on the Lumix S1 series and it is absolutely gorgeous. However, there is still a lot of talk about that is new with the system, most notably the latest sensor.
